Like many government projects, the locomotive hall opened late, and it wasn’t until 1972 that City of Birmingham was under cover in a purpose-built structure, and able to move slowly for a few metres via an electro-hydraulic ram. Birtenshaw’s vision meant that when hasty decisions had to be made about which steam locomotives were to be saved for the National Collection in the 1960s, there was no need to worry about finding a location for a ‘Duchess’ as one already had a permanent home earmarked for her.

As the 1960s progressed, the decline of steam became an ever more sorry spectacle. The Southern Region finally withdrew its last steam locomotives in 1967, leaving an ever-shrinking number of depots in the north-west to hold the candle. The end finally came on 11 August 1968, with the famous ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’, hauled by ‘Black 5s’ in part and the last operating ‘Britannia’, 70013 Oliver Cromwell. And then it was all over – or was it?
